All praises to God and thank you to my family. This quick survival guide will help anybody along their journey. I was always waiting for that perfect moment, but you just have to do it! Brought to you by Penguin. When Emmett de Monterey is eighteen months old, a doctor diagnoses him with cerebral palsy. Words too big for his 25-year-old artist parents and their happy, smiling baby. Growing up in South East London in the 1980s, Emmett is spat at on the street and prayed over at church. At his school for disabled children, he's told he will be expelled if the rumours are true, if he's gay; at his mainstream school, teachers refuse to schedule his classes on the ground floor, and he loses a stone from the effort of getting up the stairs. When he is ten years old, Emmett is chosen for a first-of-its-kind surgery in America that will 'cure' him, enable him to walk unaided. BBC cameras follow him to a hospital in Connecticut and newspapers talk of miracles. Despite himself, Emmett hopes for a miracle too: to walk, to dance, to not be nervous in wet weather. To have a body that's everyday beautiful, to hold hands in the street. To not be gay, which he believes is another word for loneliness. But when the 'miracle' doesn't occur, Emmett must reckon with a world which views disabled people as invisible, unworthy of desire. He must fight to be seen. A beautiful, intensely powerful and heart-breaking memoir, Go The Way Your Blood Beats is a story about seeing ourselves and being seen. ©2023 Emmett de Monterey (P)2023 Penguin Audio

The Country of the Blind: A Memoir at the End of Sight
A witty, winning, and revelatory personal narrative of the author's transition from sightedness to blindness and his quest to learn about blindness as a rich culture all its own "The Country of the Blind is about seeing-but also about marriage and family and the moral and emotional challenge of accommodating the parts of ourselves that scare us. A warm, profound, and unforgettable meditation on how we adjust to new ways of being in the world." -Rachel Aviv, author of Strangers to Ourselves We meet Andrew Leland as he's suspended in the liminal state of the soon-to-be blind: he's midway through his life with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that ushers those who live with it from sightedness to blindness over years, even decades. He grew up with full vision, but starting in his teenage years, his sight began to degrade from the outside in, such that he now sees the world as if through a narrow tube. Soon-but without knowing exactly when-he will likely have no vision left. Full of apprehension but also dogged curiosity, Leland embarks on a sweeping exploration of the state of being that awaits him: not only the physical experience of blindness but also its language, politics, and customs. He negotiates his changing relationships with his wife and son, and with his own sense of self, as he moves from his mainstream, "typical" life to one with a disability. Part memoir, part historical and cultural investigation, The Country of the Blind represents Leland's determination not to merely survive this transition but to grow from it-to seek out and revel in that which makes blindness enlightening. Thought-provoking and brimming with warmth and humor, The Country of the Blind is a deeply personal and intellectually exhilarating tour of a way of being that most of us have never paused to consider-and from which we have much to learn.

Life Unseen: A Story of Blindness
Imagine a world without sight. Is it dark and gloomy? Is it terrifying and isolating? Or is it simply a state of not seeing, which we have demonised and sentimentalized over the centuries? And why is blindness so frightening? In this fascinating historical adventure, broadcaster and author Selina Mills takes us on a journey through the history of blindness in Western Culture to discover that blindness is not so dark after all. Inspired by her own experience of losing her sight as she forged a successful journalistic career, Life Unseen takes us through a personal and unsentimental historical quest through the lives, stories and achievements of blind people - as well as those sighted people who sought to patronize, demonize and fix them. From the blind poet Homer, through the myths and moralising of early medieval culture to the scientific and medical discoveries of the Enlightenment and modern times, the story of blindness turns out to be a story of our whole culture.

Willie Little (nicknamed Bozo) believes life on his family’s tobacco farm is perfect, until he stumbles upon a secret that changes his world forever. He finds himself caught in a family triangle between two women similarly named, but as different as night and day. This is not the only discovery that unfolds – or the only secret encountered by this sensitive child who feels different from everyone around him. Ostracized by older boys working on his father’s 13 acre farm and involuntarily enlisted (at age 6) to ease North Carolina into school desegregation in 1968, Bozo escapes the confines of his family’s ramshackle, lime green, asbestos-shingled, shotgun shack to the bigger, unimagined world via a 19-inch Philco black and white television on chrome wheels, at the foot of his bed. In the Sticks is a coming-of-age story of growing up in the late 60s and 70s and grappling with family, love, pain, shame and a sense of belonging. It is a story of how art became his destiny, and how art helped him overcome the marginalization of being a gay black man, from the rural south. It’s one man’s journey to overcome the longing to be anywhere, but where he lived-- off Sticks Road, in the Pactolus township near Little Washington, North Carolina. This audiobook is narrated by Willie and recorded at East Avalon Recorders in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Charles Holloman, Colin Lott and musician Will Allison meticulously infused performance, special effects, and music to Willie's signature southern storytelling style noteworthy in his installation Juke Joint, part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and traveling installation, In My Own Little Corner. Both exhibits are seasoned with narrative sections, lifted from the pages of this new audiobook, an expanded version of his memoir and art book of the same title. Running time: 7 hours, 42 minutes

Wright Brothers: History of Their Reputation, Invention, and First Flight
Orville and Wilbur Wright were 2 American air travel leaders who are commonly credited with developing, structure, and flying the world's first effective motor-driven plane. On December seventeenth, 1903, four miles (6 kilometers) south of Cat Hawk, North Carolina, they made the first regulated, supported flight of a powered, heavier-than-air airplane with the Wright Leaflet. The brothers were also the first to develop airplane controls, leading the way for fixed-wing powered flight. The Wright brothers customized their flying device, the Wright Leaflet II, in the year 1904 to 1905, to perform longer-running and more aerodynamic flights, followed by the Wright Leaflet III, the first totally useful fixed-wing airplane. Their preliminary patent in the USA didn't claim to be the creation of a flying device, but rather a system of aerodynamic control that customized the surface areas of a flying automobile. Let’s see what else happened in their lives, and how they have impacted our civilization with their keen aviation skills.
