شاعرنا اليوم هو جرير بن عطية الكلبي اليربوعي التميمي الذي يعد من أشهر شعراء نجد في فن الهجاء ويكني بأبي حرزة. عمل في بداية حياته راعيا للأبل كما أقبل على تنظيم قوافي الشعر منذ بداية نشأته فقد مدح جرير يزيد بن معاوية ونال بسبب ذلك مكافأة مجزية كانت بمثابة أول جائزة ينالها من خليفة وبعد فترة قصيرة أصبحت مكانتة عظيمة لدى الخليفة الأموي عبد الملك . كانت نشأته في أسرة مثقفة فقد كان جده وأبوه وأخوه من الشعراء البارزين كما ورث ابنه بلال وأحفاده موهبته الشعرية . رغم أنَّ جرير اتجه للهجاء في أشعاره إلا أنه كان بارعا في المديح أيضا، وقد دخل في مواجهات شعرية مع شعراء زمنه وكان يتفوق عليهم بفصاحتهم فلم يثبت أمامه سوى الأخطل والفرذدق وقد كان من أغزل الناس شعرًا، واستغرق الهجاء بينه وبين الفرذدق نحو أربعين سنة ويقال أنه هجى حوالي 80 شاعرًا من أبناء عصره . في هذا الكتاب سنبحر في تفاصيل حياة هذا الشاعر غريب الأطوار لنتعرَّف على طفولته ونشأته، أسرته، شعره وعلاقته بشعراء عصره.
