The original meaning of the word derives from the Italian word 'sonetto' meaning 'little song'. Traditionally a sonnet has fourteen lines. Perhaps the best known writer of sonnets is William Shakespeare who wrote 154 of them. Of course with any set form it evolves and over the centuries sonnets have. But as poems, as expressions they have captured our imaginations as few other poetical forms have. Our readers include Richard Mitchley and Ghizela Rowe.

The Romantics - Volume 1 - An Introduction. Romanticism was a new movement in philosophy and the arts that began in the late 18th century when major political events shook the world such as the French Revolution and American Independence. It marked a distinct contrast to the prevailing Enlightenment ideals and in poetry represented a more personal intuitive, emotional and meditative expression with a back to nature imperative. It subsequently altered the way in which we perceive poetry and beyond as well as defining our own modern sensibilities to the arts. The Romantic poets who were central to this movement are traditionally characterised as the Big Six, namely Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley and Byron. However, as these volumes show, there are women poets who are often overlooked and these include Mary Shelley, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Joanna Baillie and Charlotte Smith. Among our readers are Richard Mitchley and Ghizela Rowe. In this volume we collect together William Blake to John Keats.

The Poets of the Eighteenth Century - Volume I
For many in Europe the focus has shifted west to the Americas, both by settlement and by war against the indigenous tribes. And then between themselves.Democracy would be reborn by the American War of Independence. In the East India becomes the stage for further expansion. For our wordsmiths the world had become a wider page on which to write their thoughts. Coleridge, Pope, Southey, Wordsworth speak with lyrical eloquence on subjects both great and small. But always form the heart.

It is often said that two things are unavoidable; Death and Taxes. Certainly the latter is a common thorn in adult life but as to the former it seems that for many people it is merely a hiccup in Life's eternal journey. A journey they wish, if being of good deed and character, to share at the eternity of Heaven's largesse, a reward for Faith and the obligations of Religion. Of course for those not so fortunate an altogether different experience was prepared for them; Hell. For those who take religion as their companion Heaven conjures up all manner of eternal delights. Here we take the thoughts and words of such greats as Gerald Manley Hopkins, WB Yeats, Rupert Brooke, Emily Dickinson and many others to give their views of a time to come. Among our readers are Richard Mitchley and Ghizela Rowe.

The Poetry of Death - Volume 1
Death is a subject that few of us talk about, but many think about and more than a few of us dread. Whether it is the actual end of our life's journey or merely a transit point to Heavenly glory its actual point of impact is, obviously, life changing. But what do poets think of it? How do their minds tangle with the subject and make sense of this? That's what we thought too. Poets as rich and diverse as Longfellow, Hood, Bronte, Burns and Gilbran here share their words, thoughts and visions with us. Death is unavoidable but the journey there should be as informed and enjoyable as possible. On this Volume our readers include Richard Mitchley & Ghizela Rowe.

St Andrews Day - A Holiday in Verse
Scotland's official national day is St Andrew's Day, the feast day of Saint Andrew. In the bible it is Andrew who introduces his brother Peter to Jesus as the Messiah. As well as Scotland he is also the Patron Saint of the likes of Russia, Greece, the Ukraine, and Barbados. It is thought that the day was first celebrated over a thousand years ago in the reign of Malcolm III (1034-1093).In both Scotland and those many countries with connections to, or who have a sizable Scottish population in these more modern times, it is a welcome display of heritage, culture and the fine traits of Scottish hospitality with food, music and dance.St Andrews Day is also the start of the Scottish winter festivals and thence follow Hogmanay and Burns Night. In this volume we celebrate the very finest of classic Scottish poets. From Burns to Stevenson, from Anderson to Baillie. And celebrate we should.
