A Journey to the Centre of the Earth
ules Verne was a prolific French writer who greatly influenced the science fiction genre. Verne is the second most-translated author behind only Agatha Christie. Go down the crater of the volcano Snaefells. Follow the shadow just before the month of July. You will find your way to the center of the Earth. I did it.” That mysterious message, found in a long-lost letter, propels a young man and his uncle on the adventure of a lifetime: to a prehistoric world below the earth where dinosaurs and other strange creatures still roam. Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel tells the story of German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snaefellsjökull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. ‘Journey' has been read by millions of inquisitive minds and has influenced some of the worlds most famous explorers such as Admiral Byrd, who announced on his 1926 expedition to the North Pole that "it is Jules Verne who is bringing me."

Perhaps the most popular of all of Shakespeare's comedies, A Midsummer Night's Dream humorously celebrates the vagaries of love. The approaching wedding festivities of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and his bride-to-be, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, are delightfully crisscrossed with in-again, off-again romances of two young pairs of Athenian lovers; a fateful rivalry between the King and Queen of the Fairies; and the theatrical aspirations of a bumbling troupe of Athenian laborers. It all ends happily in wedding-night revelry complete with a play-within-a-play presented by the laborers to the ecstatic amusement of all.

In A Modern Utopia, two travelers fall into a space-warp and suddenly find themselves upon a Utopian Earth controlled by a single World Government. The premise of the novel is that there is a planet (for "No less than a planet will serve the purpose of a modern Utopia") exactly like Earth, with the same geography and biology. They have, however, "different habits, different traditions, different knowledge, different ideas, different clothing, and different appliances." The narrator's double describes the ascetic Rule by which the samurai live; this includes a ban on alcohol and drugs and a mandatory annual one-week solitary ramble in the wilderness. He also explains the social theory of Utopia, which distinguished four "main classes of mind": The Poietic, the Kinetic, the Dull, and the Base. Poietic minds are creative or inventive; kinetic minds are able but not particularly inventive; the Dull have "inadequate imagination," and the Base are mired in egotism and lack "moral sense."

Fans of Arthurian tales will definitely love "Amadis of Gaul", which is a notable sight among medieval chivalric romances, written by the Portuguese writer Vasco de Lobeira. "Amadis of Gaul" is the story of knight Amadis, who searches for his own identity. Being born in secret, from a forbidden love, he was abandoned but found and raised by a knight. When he reaches maturity, he starts feeling the desire to investigate his origins, so he leaves in a quest for finding more about his identity. But this is not an ordinary quest; it is full of fantastic adventures and characters that are very different than common people: sorcerers, monsters, wild animals, kings and queens, wise men, dwarves, giants and more. The action is fast moving - there are pitched battles, combats and tournaments set in exotic places from England to Constantinople, which will certainly entertain all readers. The story has plenty of fantasy and magic - which turns Amadis into the ethos of medieval society (full of adventure non-related to the everyday life) and the embodiment of chivalric virtues: loyalty, justice, humility. Oh, and there is also romance between Amadis and Oriana - which is, of course, the main thread of the book's plot."Amadis of Gaul" is considered one of the best books of its kind, praised even by Miguel de Cervantes and definitely a significant part of the history of European literature.
