The fourth in the ‘Hew Cullan Mystery’ series spins a crooked web of devious plotting and deceit. It comes as no surprise to discover the author studied linguistics at the University of St Andrews, as a lot of love, care and attention has gone into the crafting of this series set in St Andrews in the latter half of the 16th century.  Helpfully, for those less familiar there is a town and castle map at the front of the book to assist in setting the scene plus there is also a helping hand in the form of a glossary of Old Scots words. If you have a love of time-walking into the past, step no further, settle into this series and discover a laudable, authentic mystery. If you're new to the series then your reading experience will be enriched we feel, if the series is read in order. ~ Liz Robinson

Friend & Foe A Hew Cullan Mystery Synopsis

St Andrews, 1583. The young king James VI is confined at Falkland Palace, plotting his escape. Dissension rages between Kirk and Crown, the king and his 'lord enterprisers', and between the separate factions of the church. In St Andrews Castle, a bishop in decline plays out his darkest fantasies, while Hew and his friend Giles investigate the true source of his sickness, uncovering corruption at its heart. The death of a young soldier, implicating Hew's sister and Giles's wife Meg, leads Hew to an astonishing discovery, and towards his blackest hour, his fortunes inextricable from those of James himself.

The Good Book Guide Review

This is the fourth in the Hew Cullan series set in 16th-century St Andrews. It is 1583, and there is a crisis impending involving the King and his councillors and the separate factions of the Kirk in St Andrews. At St Mary’s College, the reformer Andrew Melville is rattled by a series of peculiar happenings, while the Archbishop, Patrick Adamson, is up to no good in the castle vaults. Hew Cullan, the level-headed academic lawyer, is once more called upon to investigate a strange incident and finds himself embroiled in a murky web of superstition, subterfuge and lies in his strangest case yet.
