The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Shortlisted for the Goldsboro Gold Dagger Award 2015.

PI Cormoran Strike and his sidekick Robin follow The Cuckoo's Calling with a murder involving an author and so Galbraith (aka J K Rowling of Potter fame, in case you missed that titbit) has the chance to send up the publishing industry, slag off the Metropolitan Police and have a thoroughly good time. Underneath all that is a cracking plot with lots of twists and pace. An enjoyable detective story with the rather charming relationship between Cormoran and Robin expanded further. The fictional author's book is full of libellous information, but would his friends murder him to keep it from being published? Seems so. Dark and full of memorable characters, expecially within the publishing industry, this is certainly stronger than the first in the series. Highly addictive, an easy flowing read. Highly recommended.

If you like Robert Galbraith you might also like to read books by Kate Atkinson, Peter James and Peter Robinson.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. The secret is long out – that Robert Galbraith is the masculine sobriquet for Harry Potter author J K Rowling. The first outing for her private eye Cormoran Strike was a highly accomplished piece that thoroughly deserved its retrospective success, even were it not by a celebrity author. And it comfortably excelled Rowling’s first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy (2012), which incurred a decidedly mixed critical response, despite its prodigious sales. Her disabled military-policeman-turned-private-eye Cormoran Strike was something new, a distinctive addition to the overcrowded ranks of literary private eyes. The second book, The Silkworm, which develops the characters of Strike and his young assistant, is even better.

Synopsis

The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, she just thinks he has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realises. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published it would ruin lives - so there are a lot of people who might want to silence him. And when Quine is found brutally murdered in bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any he has encountered before ...A compulsively readable crime novel with twists at every turn, The Silkworm is the second in the highly acclaimed series featuring Cormoran Strike and his determined young assistant Robin Ellacott.

About the Author

Robert Galbraith is married with two sons. After several years with the Royal Military Police, he was attached to the SIB (Special Investigation Branch), the plain-clothes branch of the RMP. He left the military in 2003 and has been working since then in the civilian security industry. The idea for protagonist Cormoran Strike grew directly out of his own experiences and those of his military friends who have returned to the civilian world. Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym.
