Skid by Roland Watson Grant

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

This beautiful book is a direct sequel to Sketcher where we were introduced to Skid, aged 9. He is the youngest of a family of four brothers and he believes his brother Frico can change things by sketching them. The family are Louisiana swamp people. Now, in book 2, Skid is 16, Frico has been accepted into art school, their mum must work doubly hard to save money, dad is “dead”. The two other boys moved out and the family is now in a flat in New Orleans. Skid finds Frico’s diary which makes him wonder if he is not what he seems. The Caribbean word ‘skid’ means to put powers on a person that makes their life get out of control – a kind of jinx. So we have more magic, superstition, voodoo and mystery, all related to us in a gentle patois and lyrical prose. Atmospheric, uplifting and full of humour, it is a delightful gem of a book.

If you like Roland Watson Grant you might also like to read books by Albert French, Lola Shoneyin and Monique Roffey.

Synopsis

Skid by Roland Watson Grant

Having left the Louisiana swamp behind, the Beaumonts are finding it hard to settle into the big city. As he unpacks the boxes after their move to Eastern New Orleans, the now sixteen-year-old Skid finds a diary which had belonged to his older brother Frico. Among various other family secrets that emerge from this discovery is the startling revelation that Skid is a hoodoo word of ominous significance. This throws Skid's mind into turmoil and prompts him to launch into a quest for the real meaning of his name and the very foundations of his own being, an adventure which will pit him against his own brother and lead him to encounter Claire, a mysterious girl who seems to hold the answers to some of his questions.

Reviews

'As a narrator, Skid couldn't be better company; his voice is honest, funny, clever and blazing with life.'
