Long since debunked as a marketing scam, January sees the reappearance of Blue Monday. Decided by a company to sell more holidays, the third Monday in January is apparently the most depressing day of the year. But common sense dictates that Depression doesn't abide by a one-size-fits all formula, and the seriousness of such an illness is not to be overstated. It is vital that we all remember Depression isn’t reserved for one day each year, despite how January can feel like one of the most miserable months. From our experience books can offer solace, escape and a much needed mood boost during the cold, dark, winter months.

Charity The Samaritans have been leading the rebrand of Blue Monday as #BrewMonday. An opprtunity to reach out, have a brew and a catch-up with friends and loved ones. Shouting loud to debunk the myth and highlight that people can feel low no matter what day of the year it is.

Here at LoveReading, we recommend curling up with a good book, a blanket and a warm drink whenever possible. To be honest it's my default setting while waiting for the monday-est month to pass. So this #BrewMonday catch-up with your favourite book, reach out to a friend to tell them about that character that reminded you of them, send a bookish meme or a picture of a quote that made you laugh to a sibling, or simply make the time to have a coffee and a catch up with your reading buddy.

The mixture of fiction, memoir and self-help books in the list below aims to help people understand and manage their mental health and wellbeing. Keep scrolling for some recommendations to boost your mood, encourage you to have another crack at your New Year's resolution or simply pass the time and wait for the rain to stop, which according to our favourite sad donkey, Eeyore “it always does. Eventually.”

Remember that it's important to support those who suffer with mental health issues no matter the date. You can even take the opportunity to spread a little sunshine youself by making a donation to some fantastic charities such as MINDCALM or the Samaritans.

Brew anyone?
