A Time of Torment

A Time of Torment

Author: John Connolly Format: Paperback Release Date: 09/02/2017

A Maxim Jakubowski selected title. Irish crime writer Connolly's Charlie Parker series has now reached its 14th volume and never fails to impress. Indeed, it just keeps on getting better and better and increasingly haunting. What began as a particularly atmospheric series of books featuring a wounded character in search of redemption in the fogs of rural Maine and other convincing American landscapes has turned into a major literary triumph, as Connolly has quickly abandoned the restrictive corset of the crime genre and thanks to his evocative writing reached a summit where only the likes of James Lee Burke, who like Connolly ever flirts with the supernatural, shares the throne. Magical, horrific, poetic, gothic, the adjectives soon run out for this shadow world Connolly and his character inhabit and keep on renewing. Parker has even died but his mission in life persists, back from the grave to fight the forces of darkness that lie at the heart of men. A memorable character and yet another unforgettable glimpse of the face of terror. Unique and rewarding. ~ Maxim Jakubowski The Lovereading view... Prepare to enter the distinctive and formidable mind of John Connolly, set aside time, and lose yourself in this fascinating and bone-chilling world. A quick word of advice, if you haven't come across this series before, don't start here, go find yourself a copy of ‘Every Dead Thing’. Charlie Parker, who in previous books has been broken, unmade, fractured… is back, oh, and so are Louis and Angel. The first chapter whipped at my imagination and set me thinking, considering. Charlie doesn't tell his own story, instead there is a commentary, a presence, that informs, but doesn't pass judgement. John Connolly doesn't pander to the reader, you are expected to keep up, which adds a real edge to an already deeply dark and chilling read. With the supernatural on the rise and a hero needing help, ‘A Time of Torment’ is a beast of a good read and it has a whopping thumbs up from me. ~ Liz Robinson

Night Music: Nocturnes 2

If you are an intrepid reader and delight in the creatively eerie, startling and spine-chilling, then some distinctive and perfectly crafted short stories await. Of course there are 13 tales, however there is nothing about the obvious here, as they range in length from one page to a novella, then float through history, fantasy and reality. ‘Night Music’ has the ability to encourage the imagination to go into overdrive, so it felt as though John Connolly was wielding a sharpened and potentially double-edged pen when I found further books, some alive with malice, lurking within the pages. I particularly enjoyed ‘The Caxton Private Lending Library and Book Depository’ which will remain vibrantly alive and functioning within my mind. So from the strangely weird and wonderful, through to bitterly sorrowful, and grimly formidable, here have gathered, waiting to provoke your imagination, some wonderfully readable tales of the supernatural. One of our Books of the Year 2015.

Like James Lee Burke; read John Connolly. Few crime writers flirt with the supernatural, as its essence basically denies some of the major rules of mystery writing, but both Burke and Connolly do so and you never feel cheated. Burke’s Louisiana investigator Dave Robicheaux talks with the dead, while Connolly’s mourning cop Charlie Parker lives with the ghosts of his past. But their solid plots and gripping adventures prove hypnotically atmospheric, and the America they unveil in their books is different from any one else’s: lush, mysterious and compelling.Recommended:James Lee Burke - IN THE ELECTRIC MIST WITH CONFEDERATE DEAD. The body of a black man in a bayou leads Robicheaux through a maze of intrigue with roots in the past and contemporary corruption. Exquisitely written to the extent that landscape and mood become as important as actual plot.John Connolly - THE LOVERS. Charlie Parker is down on his luck, stripped of his investigator’s license and working in a bar when the past rushes back with a vengeance, and the death of an innocent young couple uncovers layers of deception.

The Gates

The Gates

Author: John Connolly Format: Hardback Release Date: 01/10/2009

October 2009 Book of the Month.   John Connolly is a mega-bestselling author of thrillers but recently his mind and his imagination wandered into an altogether different dimension and The Gates is the result.  A very strange novel but powerfully compelling and the writing is superb, it’s the story of a boy called Samuel and his unnervingly clever dog Boswell who accidentally witness the opening of a portal into hell in a neightbour’s cellar and as a consequence they find that it’s up to them to save the world from the demons threatening to destroy human life.  Meanwhile, deep in the heart of a swiss mountain, a pair of scientists are interrupted when the Large Hadron Collider malfunctions. Topical and timely as it links in to controversy surrounding the trials of the Collider, it is also demonically funny as science and satanism collide.     In addition to our Lovereading expert opinion for The Gates a small number of young readers were lucky enough to be invited to review this title. Here's a taster....'a really brilliant, breathtaking book that captures your attention from the first word...' Scroll down to read more reviews...   A message from another mega-bestselling author, Eoin Colfer:‘brilliant.  I loved every word of it.  John has fouond a voice that compares favourably with Stephen King and Monty Python which is not an easy trick.  The Gates is delightfully horrific and hilarious and will create legions of fans among the living and undead, who will be blood-thirsty for more.’

Nocturnes

Nocturnes

Author: John Connolly Format: Ebook Release Date: 11/08/2015

In his first collection of short fiction, New York Times bestselling author John Connolly offers a selection of dark, daring, and utterly haunting tales. Here are lost lovers and missing children, predatory demons, and vengeful ghosts. In The New Daughter, a father comes to suspect that a burial mound on his land hides something very ancient, and very much alive; in The Underbury Witches, a pair of London detectives find themselves battling a particularly female evil in a town culled of its menfolk. And finally, private detective Charlie Parker returns in the long novella The Reflecting Eye, in which the photograph of an unknown girl turns up in the mailbox of an abandoned house once occupied by an infamous killer. This discovery forces Parker to confront the possibility that the house is not as empty as it appears, and that something has been waiting in the darkness for its chance to kill again. In these stories, Connolly ratchets up the tension to almost unbearableand irresistiblelevels. Nocturnes is a deliciously chilling collection from one of the best thriller writers we have (Harlan Coben).
