Death Comes to the Costa del Sol

Scorching sun, inviting sea, and a fabulously entertaining mystery await in Spain. Art restorer and amateur sleuth Astrid Swift has set sail in search of her father, to her great delight on arrival, she is immediately tasked with locating an internet troll who is menacing her father’s wife. This is the third book in, the last being Death on the Isle, do stop off at the The Trust first though. Astrid is always at the helm, with a differing cast of supporting characters and stunning location joining her in each book. I particularly like the way the characters appear on the page, they’re certainly not perfect, they’re, well…they’re human! In parts capable of being lovely, awkward, annoying, thoughtful, all those differing characteristics adding up to create interesting, well-fleshed people who are absolutely fascinating to get to know. As always the sense of place is absolute, and the Costa del Sol sings with intensity. The art restoration sections flow beautifully as Astrid is mulling over who might be responsible, and I love seeing this side of her. As the mystery unravels, the suspects are clearly identified for us by author M.H. Eccleston, it’s always fun to sit as an armchair sleuth and feel a part of proceedings. I will admit to muttering and raising my eyebrows at Astrid on several occasions (again rather amusing). Death Comes to the Costa del Sol delivers cosy with a kick, which definitely ensures an engaging and enjoyable read.
