"Three nuns, small miracles, and love and friendship all come together to create the most fabulous of feel-good stories."
Feel-good and then some, yet all emotions are in play as you read this novel set in and around the fictional St Philomena’s Convent during the 1990’s. The order of the Sisters of Saint Philomena has three nuns and a convent in dire need of repair, their only hope is 90 year old Sister Cecilia winning the lottery. Author Anne Booth writes children’s books, and this, her first novel for adults has been 20 years in the making. She writes in a chatty conversational style, words skipping along light as a feather, yet this story has weight. She doesn’t shy away from the darker side of life, though empathy and compassion hold out their hands and welcome you in. A whole host of characters are in play, they pop in and out of each others lives, in fact a real community comes together. Sister Margaret and Sister Bridget feature more prominently than Sister Cecilia, their inner thoughts and feelings ensure a natural connection between the reader and characters and I found myself getting to know Sister Cecilia through the thoughts of the other nuns. This beautifully fits alongside their personalities and created a form of friendship and understanding. While this story contains miracles, it actually feels beautifully down-to-earth and endearingly real. Serving a large slice of quirky with a side of love and laughter, Small Miracles is a feast for the heart and mind.

Three nuns play the lottery to save their failing convent, resulting in a story of friendship, community, faith and love.
The 1990s are proving tough for the convent. The order of the Sisters of Saint Philomena is down to its three last nuns. The place that Sisters Margaret, Bridget and Cecilia call home is in dire need of repairs and, with no savings and no new recruits, they are facing the prospect of having to sell up and leave behind the friends and neighbours in the parish community that they love.
That is, until ninety-year-old Cecilia decides to play the newly launched National Lottery and a series of small miracles begins to unfold...
