This charm-filled quirky slice of wonderful slips in to join our LoveReading Star Books. Helen has returned to the UK to live alone after the death of her husband and her son. While waiting to greet death herself, she rescues a mouse and begins to look differently at life. The synopsis charmed me and when I saw who the author was, I knew I was in for a treat.
I have previous reviewed the author’s The Secret Lives of People in Love which which absolutely gorgeous. His eloquence lies in the apparently simplicity of his words, they form beauty and gently awaken deep-rooted emotion. I joined Helen during two weeks of her life, bearing witness to her memories as each day dawned with difficulties ahead.
The beauty of this tale lies its ability to glide along the tightrope between pain and joy, loneliness and companionship, and complexity and clarity. The moment that hit hardest was so cleverly done, different emotions speared my heart as I turned the page and then took a deep breath. I adored the story of second chances with Helen and Sipsworth, it tickles laughter, hope, and love to the surface, and offers the most enormously warming hug.
Touching both light and darkness, Sipsworth is whimsical and wise and an absolute joy of a read.
