Bringing the trilogy of Kanha and Colbey thrillers to a show-stopping end, Divinity Games is a devastatingly sinister read, as embodied by this typically menacing line from near the start of the novel: “You may be an Owner – but we are the chosen ones.”

As the government’s new all-seeing, all-knowing Divinity AI monster is unleashed on every home, out-of-favour opposition MP Harry Colbey discovers that “Someone, or more correctly something, has meddled with my life. They’ve cancelled my credit cards, taken away my bank account, stopped my train pass…They have created deep-fake lies and slander showing me with prostitutes and underage girls. Every police officer in the country is told to arrest me for any minor infraction they can drag up from my past.” If that wasn’t bad enough in itself, only his colleague Kanha believes him, which makes for a tense, paranoia-fuelled context. 

At the same time, Harry’s daughter is about to marry into a super-wealthy family who are “shareholders of the very company he was campaigning against”, while Kanha discovers that another anti-corruption MP’s suicide was, in fact, a case of him being bumped off.

While the sense of threat and menace never lets up, Divinity Games is especially powerful as a result of its pertinent presentation of how all-pervasive (and invasive) AI could become, and “there was no putting the genie back in the bottle”.
