Oh how I loved this novel, it somehow manages to be both simple and clever, and intimate and far-reaching as it crosses genres and time. In 1983 Becks begins to explore her life after her uncle dies, as she reconnects with their relationship her actions will affect the future. Author Portia Elan writes with a beautifully evocative pen, a number of different yet linked stories span the pages, tumbling over each other, creating a wave of possibilities.
I particularly enjoyed how the tales ran out of sequence, how I lived in each moment before being thrown out of one time into the next. Rather than breaking my concentration and feelings for the characters, it honed my understanding, enabling me to attach to them and crisscross the six hundred years with surprising ease.
The different methods used for exploration, including emails and a text-based interactive computer game helped to set each time in place. The future was fascinating, I found myself feeling as though I was both coming home and setting out on a quest of discovery. While traversing the meaning of family, grief, love, and inner peace I also found myself considering the collective actions of humanity.
