The End of the Day

The End of the Day

Author: Claire North Format: Hardback Release Date: 06/04/2017

A Maxim Jakubowski selected title. Charlie just happens to be the harbinger of death. He never wanted the job, but he had no choice in the matter. His headquarters are in Milton Keynes and he is not the only one of his kind as even the horsemen of the Apocalypse have their own harbingers! Claire North, a pseudonym for the prolific Catherine Webb who also writes as Kate Griffin, is best known for her frantic but ingenious high concept fantasy thrillers The First Fifteen Lives of Harry North, Touch and The Sudden Appearance of Hope. This new take is equally original if at times a bit elliptical, but offers echoes of Pratchett and Gaiman albeit in a darker, more contemplative mood and the topsy turvy adventures of Charlie, the salesman of death in his wide-ranging, breathless travels are intriguing and amusing and will not disappoint readers in search of the uncommon. ~ Maxim Jakubowski

The Sudden Appearance of Hope

Author: Claire North Format: Paperback Release Date: 26/01/2017

Claire North has made a quick and special reputation as an author who writes speculative thrillers that, via the experience of a sympathetically and closely drawn central character, examine an aspect of how we see or interact with the world around us. The Fifteen Lives of Harry August and Touch were thought-provoking in the best way and never less than engaging and gripping stories. Hope follows in their steps. Fans of Matt Haig will find themselves drawn to her story. Hope isn’t remembered. Starting when she was sixteen people simply stopped remembering her. Once she was out of sight she was literally out of mind for them. This is distressing and isolating for her but Hope is resourceful and smart and soon begins to use her enforced status as an outsider to her advantage, becoming a lone thief. Tautly described thefts follow. Along the way she encounters people who have inflicted another sort of loneliness on themselves, pursuing the illusion of Perfection; a self-improvement App. North has plenty to say here about how we exist or don’t exist in our digital world but it is the troubled Hope that gives us the story to care about. ~ Simon Spanton

Touch

Young adult writer Catherine Webb was also known to pen great fantasy adventures as Kate Griffin, but the revelation she was also Claire North, author of last year's unique The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, was a major surprise. Her follow-up, Touch, is as intriguing and breathless as it is brilliantly original, constantly defying expectations and a step (or two) ahead of the reader. Featuring a troubled hero who can move from body to body just by grazing someone's fingertip and who becomes the subject of a sinister assassination attempt, the tentacular plot spans centuries and the whole wide world in an attempt for the protagonist to find out why he (or she) is being hunted and opens the lid on a boiling pot of conspiracy theories. Agile, unpredictable, this one will keep you awake at night in the search for answers. ~ Maxim Jakubowski   Maxim Jakubowski February 2015 Highly Recommended. Sarah Broadhurst's view... The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August was a stunning debut and this is even better.  It is amazing.  A thriller with a dimension that others simply do not have.  The entity known as Kepler can pass from one body to another through the simple touching of skin.  From victim to murderer to cop to receptionist to driver to … anyone.  A chase becomes something so much more than running and hiding when you can hide as anyone.  It also adds a new level of excitement.  Hard to describe why it is so good, you just have to read it.  I’m serious, it is one of the weirdest and most wonderful thrillers I have ever read and I’m sure you will think so too.

Maxim Jakubowski Highly Recommended. In her recent and rightly praised Life After Life, Kate Atkinson revisited the eternal theme of 'what would you do if you could live again?'. Not a new idea and one much exploited by fantasy and SF writers, but this new variation on the genre by the pseudonymous Claire North notches up matters to the nth degree. Harry August is part of an elite group of people, The Cronus Club, who can live again and again beyond death itself, although they are not allowed to change the past. When he encounters evidence that someone is doing so and is endangering the world's future, he encounters his nemesis and their battle continues over fifteen lives. Imaginative and dazzling, this spans the world and the centuries and never flags, while constantly defying the reader's expectations. Science fiction for people who don't like the customary trappings of SF: if this doesn't convert you, nothing will. Just read it!   Sarah Broadhurst's view... This is an extremely complex plot expressing an even more complicated idea, and it is wonderful.  Not time travel; not quite reincarnation; not a ‘Ground Hog Day’ repeating loop.  A little bit of all of these.  Harry August lives many lives and remembers each one but they are all the same one over and over.  If you think that is complicated take a look at the rest of it.  It is one of those stories where I hesitate to tell anything in case of spoiling it.  It is a thriller across many life times.  I could not put it down.  It really is a rare gem, a totally enthralling read and a startling original idea.  I loved it.
