"This is a well-written book that flowed easily, and I liked that strong sense of family and tradition throughout the story."
Telling Giulia’s story in fragments ‘In Search of Cameos’ by Susan Delle Cave is a family drama which sees truths and secrets uncovered and worlds colliding. In this tessellated story we see Giulia as she is brought from Italy to England to school, learning to integrate with her pupils, growing up and her connection to her Catholic faith and her discovery of family secrets and connections throughout her life. This is a well-written book that flowed easily, and I liked that strong sense of family and tradition throughout the story. I found that I learnt about Italian family customs and there’s a variety of characters throughout the story to get to know and see develop. Telling the story in different ‘cameos’ is a clever structural idea but one that I found kept me on the fringes of the plotline. This allows the reader to learn more about the entire cast of characters instead of connecting to just the one main character although I did find that it didn’t fully capture my attention. In all I found that ‘In Search of Cameos’ is an easy to read study into life, human connection and family history, told in a unique way that may appeal to fans of literary fiction and family drama.

We are all searching for something...for answers...for love...for God perhaps. (Many would say for happiness.) Or could it be for those precious unexpected moments when life hovers pain-free...life's 'cameos'? As for the enigmatic Giulia, her search to uncover family truths finds her caught between two colliding worlds, or maybe three or four. Where exactly does she fit in? Should she speak of what she discovers? She finds solace in the beauty of the natural world and in man's highest creative achievements set against her own strict Catholic formation. But nature can also destroy...and not all of humankind sets out to make our time on Earth more bearable, more poetic. Each chapter...or 'cameo'...tells a story of its own, each slotted within the bigger picture of Giulia's journey. She is not alone. She has the support of a dear friend and, whether she likes it or not, of an elusive man in the outer shadows of her existence.
