LoveReading Says

The opening immediately sets the tone: “This one’s for the working-class, strip-mall, military-town kids…” It’s a love letter to outsiders chasing impossible dreams, and that sense of ambition and longing runs through every page.

When Detective Grey Holloway arrives at an execution-style murder outside a sprawling McMansion, she quickly realises why she’s been assigned the case. She bears an uncanny resemblance to the victim - a woman who could almost be her twin. Grey is impossible not to root for: brilliant, fiercely ambitious and already one of the LAPD’s brightest detectives, with a 100% clearance rate and a determination to live up to the legacy of her father whose footsteps she’s followed into policing.

But this isn’t just Grey’s story. As the narrative shifts between the present-day investigation and the lives of Scout and Izzy, two girls who met as child performers dreaming of making it in Hollywood, the novel becomes something much bigger than a murder mystery. It peels back the glossy surface of the entertainment industry to expose a world fuelled by power, influence, control and ruthless competition, where everyone is encouraged to see everyone else as the enemy.

Rather than familiar rivalries and “mean girl” dynamics, Hot Girl Murder Club instead asks a far more interesting question: what happens when women refuse to compete? Scout’s entourage evolves into something far more powerful than a clique - a genuine sisterhood.

Running alongside the police investigation is journalist Rosie Wright, whose pursuit of an abandoned sexual harassment story reminds us that the #MeToo conversation is far from over. Together, these threads build into a novel that’s as interested in justice as it is in solving a crime.

The central mystery crackles with tension, but the ideas behind it which make Hot Girl Murder Club stand out. Revenge. Feminism. Power. Dominance. The abuse of influence by the one per cent. Throughout, the novel continually asks whether vengeance can ever become justice and whether those seeking retribution are monsters or modern-day heroes.

It’s slick, propulsive and packed with twists, but beneath the thriller lies a sharp commentary on Hollywood, celebrity culture and the systems that protect powerful men while forcing women to fight for every inch of space. The result is a murder mystery with real bite - one that entertains while asking difficult questions about who gets believed, who gets silenced and who ultimately gets the last word.
