"Sharp and pointed, passionate and bloody, feel the bite of three very different female vampires over the centuries."
Remove the allure of the vampire and you are basically left with a serial killer, keep that in mind as you read! 1532, 1837, and 2019 mark the beginning of three female vampire’s stories. The tales weave together, intricate stitch by intricate stitch. This isn’t an easy read, there are a lot of vicious killings resulting in a whole heap of dead bodies. Author V.E. Schwab has created three very complicated and yet fascinating characters, these vampires have an edge. The timelines, the locations, all have an immense sense of place. The social and political difficulties faced by women sit front and centre. It feels angry, toxic, and also, somehow, passionate, yet the author doesn’t glamourise the hunger or the bloody kills, and it’s interesting to note your feelings as the number of deaths grow. I was unsettled, and as I realised where the strength of these women lay, found myself sitting in judgement, not of them, but myself. Chosen as a Liz Pick of the Month because this entirely captivating read really made me think. Full of blood, lust, and vengeful female vampires, Bury our Bones in the Midnight Soil is a bold, angry scream of a novel.
