This charming observational novel is the most lovely and whimsical of reads. A family move from city living in California across the US to country living in Vermont and find an entirely different world awaits. Prize-winning and bestselling don’t always go hand in hand, but they do with author Daniel Mason.
He writes so beautifully, from the lightest of touches to the most devastating, each sentence flows and owns the page. I absolutely adored the unforgettable North Woods which is on my list of all time favourite novels, it roams centuries but remains in place, concentrating on a plot of land and the various people who lived there.
Country People, is entirely different, yet you can still tell who the author is, feel the connection, and fall in love with the words. The characters here are everything, and within that I include the house, the land, and the animals. Even if only on the page for a moment, you feel the truth of them, and appreciate each individual atom making them who they are, I felt that the author enjoyed writing this, and had fun along the way.
I would recommend this novel to those who love a quirky slice of wonderful, who don’t need all the answers, and are happy to flit, flirt, and float through a novel that loves its cast, its location, and the wonderful weirdness of life.
