LoveReading Says

Welcome to the haunting gothic feast that we celebrate in this LoveReading Star Book. In 1997 Eve returns to the Suffolk coast to revisit the childhood moment that changed her life, while in 1938 Vita attempts to escape the confines of her domineering brother. I have adored each and every one of the books I’ve read by Polly Crosby, she is one of my must-read authors. Her ability to paint a vibrant picture cut through with a slash of darker emotion is beautiful. In Vita and the Birds a broken building of glass becomes the beating heart of the novel. While this slice of coast feels touchable, the glass cathedral of the marshes sits in a place almost outside of time, and floats between a place to fear and sanctuary. While men feature, it is the women who shine, even when a memory on the page. Memories, secrets, and fear hold court while chills creep across the page. The richly woven plot twists and turns through the two time frames, creating questions and answers. I felt a connection to Eve and Vita, I feared for them, and came to love them as characters. I sank into this book and swam into its deeply dark yet velvety depths. Evocative and memorable, Vita and the Birds sits as a highly recommended Liz Pick of the Month.
