Rebus has everything against him, an internal investigation, a possible miscarriage of justice and a pretty tough Glasgow gangster. Enough to try the patience of any cop, but when it’s the curmudgeon Rebus he really has to tread a fine line. Another excellent read. This book won a well-deserved Golden Dagger Award (Best Mystery as awarded by the Crime Writers Association of Britain).

- Phylippa Smithson - 'Totally captivated from the very first page of this crime thriller – but no surprises there as the author and his character Rebus are top of the premier league in their genre.'
- Angela Rhodes - 'DI John Rebus, has his own ways of getting to the truth, and yes they are a little unconventional, but he gets the job done.'
- Clare Topping - 'I finished this book in less than two days and will now be endeavouring to read all of the Inspector Rebus novels from the beginning.'

Ian Rankin says: “I had no idea when I published Knots & Crosses in 1987 that Rebus would still be sharing his adventures – and misadventures – with me thirty years later. It’s a thrill to be spending 2017 celebrating the man, his legacy, and his taste in music. Central to this is RebusFest – a weekend festival in Edinburgh of all things Rebus. I just hope he enjoys all the hoopla – I need him to still be speaking to me afterwards…”
The 8th Inspector Rebus novel from Ian Rankin.
Rebus is juggling four cases trying to nail one killer - who might just lead back to the infamous Bible John. And he's doing it under the scrutiny of an internal inquiry led by a man he has just accused of taking backhanders from Glasgow's Mr Big.
As if this wasn't enough, there are TV cameras at his back investigating a miscarriage of justice, making Rebus a criminal in the eyes of a million or more viewers.
Just one mistake is likely to mean an unpleasant and not particularly speedy death or, worse still, losing his job.
