Whether or not you have previously read any of O’Brien’s works, this is a perfectly sublime book of short stories, first published between 1968 and 2011. O’Brien has an impeccable touch, her writing is clever, understated, and she has the great gift of being able to make observations without judgement, allowing the reader to make their own decisions. These short stories don't feel as though they've been created but have evolved naturally without unnecessary tampering or adornment. You can feel as though you've been invited to bear witness, allowed a glimpse and peak into real lives. It can feel like a conversation, a something and nothing with no particular point, soft and dreamlike, but later returning to claw and clamour at your consciousness. So, whether you re-discover some old much loved friends or greet new acquaintances destined to become close companions…this is quite simply, a must read. ~ Liz Robinson

Synopsis

The Love Object Selected Stories of Edna O'Brien by Edna O'Brien

Collected here together for the first time in one beautiful volume are the stories of an expert practitioner of the shorter form. Spanning five decades of writing, The Love Object takes the most memorable and successful stories from collections like A Scandalous Woman and Saints and Sinners; stories such as 'Shovel Kings', 'Irish Revel', 'Lantern Slides' and 'Paradise' that have bewitched generation after generation. Referred to in the New York Review of Books by Harold Bloom as 'the short story master', Edna O'Brien's stories are a cumulative portrait of a nation, seen from within and without. Here you will find stories about families, feuds, love and land; enchantment, disenchantment, and throughout, the manifold bonds of love. Here are stories about the tension between country and city life, the instinct towards escape and nostalgia for home; and always the shimmering, potent prose.

Reviews

'O'Brien anatomises with a forensic eye the yearning for love ...these stories [have] extraordinary power.'

Matthew Dennison, The Times

'Every one of the stories included is a shining example of a master at work.'

Lucy Scholes, Observer
