Up Town Top Rankin – Pre-Publication Exclusives

We’ve some very exciting pre-publication titles this month, so you can get well ahead of the game. Cumming takes crime crown

Just announced. A Foreign Country by Charles Cumming has been named Scottish Crime Book of the Year 2012 at the inaugural Bloody Scotland crime writing festival. A Foreign Country, his sixth novel, concerns the disappearance of the first female head of MI6. Cumming said 'It's a huge honour to win such a prestigious award in the first year of this fantastic festival'.  

Man Booker Shortlist special category

Last month we told you about the longlist and our favourites – well, now you may have heard that the Man Booker shortlist has just been announced and it is a wonderful mix of some big name authors such as Hilary Mantel and Will Self along with some lesser known ones from smaller publishers including Salt and Myrmidon. See all the hopefuls in one category so that you can pick your own winner before the prize is awarded in October! Here at Lovereading we’re nailing our colours to the mast now with our favourite on the shortlist being The Lighthouse by Alison Moore from Salt Publishing. If you’ve not yet read it we urge you to do so.  

Noteworthy for September...

The publication of Boneland by Alan Garner sees the conclusion of the trilogy that started with The Weirdstone of Brisingamen in 1960 and the sequel The Moon of Gomrath.   Our reviewer said ‘anyone looking for a haunting story that will leave them with much to ponder will most certainly be well rewarded’ – Find out more about this remarkable trilogy of books today.  

A crossover novel not to miss

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness was originally published for a teen audience. It won the major children’s book prizes and deservedly so. However, it’s a novel which undoubtedly has considerable crossover appeal to an adult audience and we’re delighted the publisher has at last brought out an edition with an adult friendly cover. Described as “Exceptional", “Outstanding…gripping, moving” and “Perhaps the most hard-hitting, touching and beautiful book I have read ever.” Now is the time to discover more about this hauntingly touching story of how a boy deals with the looming threat of his mother’s death from cancer. This is one that is absolutely not to be missed.
With the nights drawing in Reading Groups seem to flourish so if you are a member of one or need to choose a book for your group to read then do have a look at our special section – full of titles we think are perfect to generate lots of discussion. This month one of our favourites is Between a Mother and Her Child by Elizabeth Noble - a poignant tale with lots of insight into family life.
