Two brothers born identical but their lives diverge significantly in adulthood. Where one works to change the world the other goes off grid, with no official record made of him again. Told abstractly in the form of reports is a story calling into question life. In all its messy, unquantifiable, ambiguous, open-to-interpretation ways.

And with every word that can be misused taken out of the lexicon, the questions it asks can’t be answered cleanly within the book. Thus leaving the reader contemplating the true story and meaning from the negative space of what is presented.

The Rule is an incredibly well-crafted book. The way the storyline unfolds in abstract, clinical reports, developing a story in what’s not being said as well as what creates an interesting read challenges the reader to form their own understanding of the world and in some sense, find their own meanings too.

To me, this book explores what constitutes a life, is it academic success and an impact on the world left as a legacy. Or is it a life lived humbly, without attention, slowly moving in the same direction anyway, playing a small part to fix things along the way before creating something new? Although I wouldn’t describe this book as an “easy read”, its unique structure would fascinate more literary readers, and its themes would appeal to readers looking for something speculative.
