"A compelling memoir of a father’s final trips with his family."
Available in kindle and paperback from Amazon.
Reflecting on his past experiences of Spain and Gibraltar while taking his wife and two sons on holiday, The Vanished Gardens of Cordova Emil Rem is a travel memoir filled with contemplation. This is the third collection of stories published by Emil Rem, but you don’t have to have read the other two in order to be swept away on your travels here. The look back into past trips nudges the author to look back at his roots and heritage, while also watching as his sons forge a new path forward. Many people have places that they’ve visited as a child or in years gone by, and then returned sometimes to find it exactly the same and others to see it changed beyond recognition, and so can relate to Rem’s exploration of the area around his old school, and nostalgic visits to restaurants in London. Each chapter is settled in this book like a vignette, sandwiched between an illustration reflecting one of the scenes and the author and illustrator's notes at the end, providing an additional comment and moment of reflection.
I feel anyone that is a parent to grown up children will relate to the nostalgia and bittersweet nature of those final family trips. Readers who haven’t may recall those trips with their own parents. The Vanished Gardens of Cordova is a gentle, compelling read that inspires reflection about life, travel and family.

"Yes, you were great," Lawrence admitted. "Nine centuries ago."
"Time to be great again, my lord."
"My father is old and I…I long for the vanished gardens of Cordova."
Cordova. The name hung over him like rich, intoxicating Arab perfume. He had longed to visit her since a child. What would she be like? Were her gardens still abloom? ...”
