A dystopian science fiction where life aspirations are called into question. ‘Memloots - The Exposition’ by Francis O’Joseph is set in a world where a philanthropic alien race divided the world into domed ‘farms’ in order to help humans prosper. Those living within these enclosed domes work with the aspiration of being promoted or chosen to go to a dream planet of Maraville. Our main character, Philo, is a scholarship student of the Plethora Academy and who has been raised with a healthy dose of scepticism, realises that things may not be what they seem as an opportunity to go to Maraville arises. This is a really interesting plotline, there are a mixture of themes and genres used throughout this book to create depth and provoke thought. Science-fiction sets the groundwork, as a superior alien NGO sells the dream of Maraville, although tension is created as the veil is lifted in flashes and stages, hinting to the reader that there is something more sinister to come. Meanwhile we see Philo in a coming-of-age narrative exploring the world around him, who he is and who he may want to be. Dystopia appears as the people of Plethora are sold the dream of Maraville, being indoctrinated through the education system to not know any difference, and fed (literally in some cases) whatever is required to keep the superior race, the Intelloyds in control. Throughout the novel genre tropes are used as tools to explore topical issues: consumerism, capitalism, religion and spirituality. There’s biblical parallels that suggest a spiritual exploration and awakening and a great quote that perfectly illustrates the consequences of voter apathy: “Joining the brave quest against the impertinent kid were also the ordinary townsfolk who, though having stayed in the back all along, constituted the most numerous community”. This is not a book to breeze through. There are a lot of turns that can leave you disorientated if you don’t give the story your full attention. However I think the more time you take with this book the more you will uncover the questions the author is asking about the world we live in. Like a coming of age story it questions our relationships and our place in the world.
