Griotgnosis is a lyrically written piece of narrative non-fiction, an exploration and search for self and meaning. Travelling “from beaches, to temples, to rivers”, to advice found at home, discoveries found through meditation and plant medicine, and overcoming Lust and Sloth to reach your goals.

The focus on the journey makes this book open to exploration, it encourages the reader to think about the times they may have been lost, clouded by guilt, paranoia or short term pleasures that stopped you from reaching your ultimate goals. I also liked the writing style that personified these concepts, Wrath became a younger twin opponent to overcome, Lust approaches him in a bar.

This adds a more mystical element to the story while still presenting them as obstacles to overcome. The cyclical nature of the narrative makes it even more meditative, the end answering the tension he’s experiencing at the beginning flows well in terms of delivering a story. 

An interesting read for those wanting to explore spirituality and the inner self, Griotgnosis is a good read for those wanting to evaluate their lives through this lens in order to gain a deeper understanding of mind and body to make changes to their own journey.
