"A beautifully crafted reminder that the greatest romances aren't just lived by two people, but witnessed by everyone around them."
There are some novels that feel original, and there are those rarities that make you wonder why no one has thought of the concept before. They feel like an instant classic. Like you've been waiting for this book. And Main Characters by Bobby Palmer is exactly that kind of book. It's the real deal.
This is a love story told by everyone except the people at the centre of it. Chapter by chapter, the narrative shifts. The photographer. Her boss. The barista. The woman at the next table. The jogger. The guy marking papers. Estate agents, eavesdroppers, passing acquaintances, prying eyes. Each offers a snapshot, a fleeting moment in time, another piece of the puzzle. Little by little, page by page, Clara and Seb's story unfolds.
It’s a beautiful premise in its simplicity and it’s beautifully executed. I adored the way Palmer captures relationships through overheard conversations and half-glimpsed moments. One person observes a look, another witnesses an argument, someone else catches a tender exchange. No single narrator has the whole story, but together they create something richer and more truthful than any one perspective ever could.
The structure shouldn’t work as seamlessly as it does, and yet it absolutely sings. The story feels almost cinematic - a series of perfectly framed scenes, snapshots that gradually reveal a much bigger picture. It’s a novel about friendship and destiny, about longing and finding your place in the world. It’s about family and parenthood, ambition and disappointment, and all the messy, beautiful ways our lives intersect with others. Above all, it’s about that great, impossible, movie-worthy kind of love. The kind everyone secretly wants. The kind we hope exists.
Tender, clever, warm, it’s one of the most inventive and wonderful love stories I’ve read in a while. I cried throughout, in the best possible way. Bobby Palmer has created something genuinely special: a reminder that every great love story belongs not just to the people living it, but to everyone lucky enough to witness it.
