Find out moreJojo Moyes was our Guest Editor in March 2014 - click here - to see the books that inspired her writing.
Jojo Moyes is a novelist and a journalist. She worked at the Independent for ten years before leaving to write full time. Her previous novels have all been critically acclaimed and include Me Before You, The Girl You Left Behind, The Ship of Brides, Foreign Fruit, and The Last Letter from Your Lover. She lives in Essex with her husband and their three children.
Me Before You was 2012’s greatest love story – it was Spring 2012’s most popular Richard & Judy pick that went on to be nominated for book of the year at the Galaxy Book Awards. Excitingly, it has since been optioned by MGM and Jojo has been writing the script this summer.
Jojo has spent much of 2013 touring the US and this summer Me Before You went straight in on The New York Times bestseller Top Ten chart. In the UK, appearances this year so far include World Book Night, Hay Literary Festival, The Bookseller Industry Awards and the Orange Women’s Prize.
Her latest novel The One Plus One is in the same vein of Me Before You – an unconventional love story with a dilemma at its heart. It has a cast of wonderful characters and show that family comes in all forms and that through hard work and optimism, your happy ending might come true after all.

Alice Wright doesn't love her new American husband. Nor her domineering father-in-law or the judgmental townsfolk of Baileyville, Kentucky. Stifled and misunderstood, she yearns for escape and finds it in defiant Margery O'Hare and the sisterhood bringing books to the isolated and vulnerable. But when her father-in-law and the town turn against them, Alice fears the freedom, friendship and the new love she's found will be lost . . .
Alice had come halfway across the world to find that, yet again, she was considered wanting. Well, she thought, if that was what everyone thought, she might as well live up to it.' England, late 1930s, and Alice Wright - restless, stifled - makes an impulsive decision to marry wealthy American Bennett Van Cleve and leave her home and family behind. But stuffy, disapproving Baileyville, Kentucky, where her husband favours work over his wife and is dominated by his overbearing father, is not the adventure - or the escape - that she hoped for. That is, until she meets Margery O'Hare, a troublesome woman - and daughter of a notorious felon - the town wishes to forget. Margery's on a mission to spread the wonder of books and reading to the poor and lost - and she needs Alice's help. Trekking alone under big open skies, through wild mountain forests, Alice, Margery and their fellow sisters of the trail discover freedom, friendship - and a life to call their own. But when Baileyville turns against them, will their belief in one another - and the power of the written word - be enough to save them? Inspired by a remarkable true story, The Giver of Stars features five incredible women who will prove to be every bit as beloved as Lou Clark, the unforgettable heroine of Me Before You.

I love short stories, they have the power to give us a fleeting, yet memorable glimpse into other lives. Lives of strong, beautiful characters as they face the challenges that life throws at them, each in search of a little piece of happiness. This collection from Jojo Moyes manages to do that perfectly. They are light and yet there is an underlying significance about them that resonates, that we can relate to. The characters are likeable but not without their flaws and in this Moyes expertly gives them a realistic, human touch. As each of us can be, they are vulnerable, feel pain, sorrow, disappointment, love, happiness and have their own difficulties to overcome. This was a real treat to read. The stories were of variable length yet enough for me to learn a little from each shared experience. I locked myself away in the bathroom and before I knew it the bath water was cold and I resembled a prune, so absorbed was I in these wonderful stories. Another delightful treat from Jojo Moyes. Find yourself a quiet spot and enjoy. ~ Shelley Fallows

Jojo admits that this follow-up to Me Before You came as a result of popular demand. Fans wanted to know what happened to Lou after Will died. However if you haven’t read the first book it matters not for this is complete in itself. A tale of a young woman hurting badly after death by assisted suicide of the love of her life. It tells of her sad coping, of stumbling, existing and trying so hard to heal. It is a very fine novel in its own right. If you have read Me Before You then this will mean a lot to you. Lou discovers Will had more to his life than she realised and discovering bits about him makes for a fascinating read. Suffice to say that it is good and that is all you need to know before buying it. ~ Sarah Broadhurst
A gifted, high achiever walks out of his flat one morning and gets hit by a taxi. We pick up on him a few years later when he is finding it impossible to accept and adapt to his paraplegic life. Various carers have been and gone - unable to take his anger. Then along comes our protagonist - a girl desperate for work with no idea what she is walking into. This is beautifully written and very powerful. The relationship between the two unfolds with heartfelt poignancy. To tell you more would be a sin, but certainly the ending took me by surprise. A very fine and impressive book tackling a sensitive subject - euthanasia. ~ Sarah Broadhurst The New York Times Number 1 Bestselling Novel is due to be released as a film starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Clafin on Friday 3 June 2016. A story that makes you fall in love, makes you sob your heart out and changes your view of the world is a powerful and beautiful story indeed, and that’s exactly why I loved this novel so much. When a book stays with you long after you’ve finished reading it, you know it is a real gem and Jojo Moyes has done it again – to our delight she has given us another precious gem in her new novel The Girl You Left Behind. I have once more fallen in love, sobbed my heart out and looked at the world in a new way. From occupied France during WWI to modern day London, this book swept me away. The Girl You Left Behind is a beautifully written, heartbreaking and utterly stunning novel and I hope you will love it as much as I do.'

One of the Top 10 books in the Lovereading Readers’ Choice Book of the Year 2014. One of our Books of the Year 2014. JoJo Moyes is an incredible writer whose ability to depict modern life in all its glorious complexities is second to none. This is a touching story of the lengths we’ll go to for the people we love or just to try to escape from a life we don’t want to be living anymore. You’ll fall in love with Jess and Ed as much as you want them to fall for each other and be wishing that the story turns out the way it should, not going terribly wrong the way life so often does. October 2012 Book of the Month. The Girl You Left Behind is the title of a painting which is at the centre of this dual-time novel of World War I and the present. Painted by a young French soldier for his wife, it is her most treasured possession but it catches the attention of the occupying German Kommandant. Today that same painting is also the most treasured possession of a young English wife, having been a present from her recently deceased husband. Both women feel a link to their men through the painting and both have heart-breaking times beautifully portrayed by this very fine author, whom I have backed from the start. She's lovely. A few Lovereading members have been lucky enough to read this novel and have written reviews for us. Scroll down to see what they think... Shortlisted for the Romantic Novel of the Year Award 2008. RNA panel comment: "I was drawn into this story. I wanted to be a guest at the Silver Bay Hotel and savour the experiences and kinship of the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this moving tale, with its sentiment and humour."
Jojo shot to fame with the magnificent Sheltering Rain, she won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award with her second book, Foreign Fruit, and this is her third. It’s terrific. They all have a dual time setting, family secrets and romantic undertones and they are all utterly enchanting. This is the 60s and the present and I urge you to wallow in it.Comparisons: Rosamunde Pilcher, Penny Vincenzi.Similar this month: Julian Fellowes, Jenny Pitman.
A hugely enjoyable book, a factual account of an aircraft carrier, HMS Victorious, over six weeks transporting 650 wartime brides and 11,000 servicemen from Australia to England. It is difficult to imagine the sheer size of a ship able to carry so many people together with 19 aircraft. The interwoven story amongst the facts of such a journey is brilliantly conceived. Revolving around four of the brides from varying backgrounds and spotted with personal diaries and newspaper snippets, it’s a glorious read on a grand scale. Even better, in my opinion, is her first book, Sheltering Rain.Comparison: Rosamunde Pilcher, Michelle Paver, Judith Lennox.Similar this month: None but try Charlotte Bingham and George MacDonald Fraser.
