Ratking by Michael Dibdin

Lovereading view...

March 2011 Guest Editor Robert Goddard on Ratking...

Aurelio Zen, Michael Dibdin’s Italian detective in a series of novels, has recently made it to the small screen. It’s enjoyable viewing and the scenery’s wonderful, but the TV Zen bears little similarity to Dibdin’s original creation. Ratking, Zen’s first appearance in print, won the 1988 Gold Dagger Award and it’s easy to see why. Dibdin takes you deep into the tangled undergrowth of Italian politics and police work (the two are inextricably bound up with each other) and gives you the sardonic, slightly battered but stubbornly ethical Zen to guide you through it. As the series went on, Zen grew older and more cynical, but everything you need to know and understand and love him is right here at the start.

If you like Michael Dibdin you might also like to read books by Jason Webster, Robert Wilson and Barbara Nadel.

Win a signed copy of stunning debut Blue Light Yokohama

We have 10 signed copies (using signed book plates) of Blue Light Yokohama, a stunning debut novel. It is a beautifully plotted police procedural set in Japan by Nicolas Obregon, a new British author. Evocative and serpentine, this marks the debut of a fresh new voice and a remarkable maverick detective with a difference.
