Hot on the heels of the eponymous social media trend, Carrie Hughes’ The Trad Wife dives deep into the darkest recesses of patriarchal control in the digital age in a novel that treads a line between domestic noir thriller and dark humour.

In this case, digital creator Melissa, an English gal in New York, is unhappy with her working life as a result of feeling side-lined by AI and a younger colleague. Frustration (and more, as things turns out) leads her to make the monumental decision to up sticks with her young daughter, Willow, to work for a wealthy Mormon “trad wife” sensation she’s been tracking on social media. With her hunky ranch husband, five kids, and devotion to effortlessly making everything from scratch, beautiful Faith appears to have it all.

A sense of the trouble to come is seeded early on when Melissa, who describes herself as a “Latter-Day Sinner” after being raised in the Mormon church, worries, “What if they find out the real reason I’m infiltrating their lives?”, and when Faith’s inner thoughts are revealed through a sequence of end-of-chapter interludes, including this shocker: “She thinks she’s smart, but she has no idea what’s gonna hit her”. On arriving at Lavender Field Ranch, it’s not long before Melissa realises what might be hitting her as sinister secrets are exposed.

Underpinned by themes of manipulation, entrapment, indoctrination and coercive control in the name of God, and in the name of keeping men happy, The Trad Wife is a twisty ride of a read.
