"A beautiful carousel sits at the centre of this evocative mystery which spans decades, continents, and genres, and would appeal to those who love to enter and experience the wider story with their characters. "
This captivating historical mystery novel crosses genres as a coming-of-age tale of self-awareness and a heartfelt relationship story also slip between the pages. Maisie Marlow moves to Chicago from England in 1914 aged ten and grows up to run an amusement park, while Laurent Bisset’s need to make his name and solve the disappearances of several who have ridden a beautiful carousel sends him from his home in Paris to the US.
The dazzling carousel itself joins the story in 1900, and is a main feature throughout, adding a touch of whimsy and charm that sits at odds against the disappearances. Two mysteries sit within this tale by debut author Fiza Saeed McLynn, and while central to this story there are times when they slide to the side as relationships between characters ebb and flow.
The supporting characters, from the fairground workers to the upper classes, all give vivid colour and atmosphere while the character development of Maisie and Laurent feels authentic and grounded. Maisie’s story in particular shines, her strength and fortitude ensured I held an emotional connection with her.
Profoundly emotional themes of prejudice, trauma, and guilt walk beside love, hope, and self-discovery as the years pass. A beautifully evocative mystery, The Midnight Carousel spins a tale of darkness, sadness, and resilience within its atmospheric pages.
