Powerful storytelling and compelling characters are to be found in this Britannia set historical fiction. Set in AD 59, Venator by A. M. Swink tells the story of Decimus, a highly regarded and long serving centurion for the Roman Empire, 2 years out from a yearned for retirement in Rome, serving in the furthest reaches of the Empire in Britannia.
Luciana is a young cornovii princess, raised by a father who wanted peace with their Roman neighbours and tutored in the Roman ways. But when that peace is shattered, the deadly conflict throws Decimus and Luciana together. Swink does a commendable job of taking the reader back in time and immersing them in the storyline, with great care taken to describe the character’s surroundings and the politics at play.
This is no doubt indicative of a great deal of time and care given to research off the page in order to bring this historical narrative to life. I loved reading about bothe Decimus and Luciana as our two main characters, their frustrations with each other and themselves as they enter into a power play was highly entertaining to read.
I also developed a soft spot for the side character of Nicomedes, a young slave boy who becomes a loyal friend to Luciana. With detailed descriptions of Roman battles and strategy in the midst of the action, questions as you’re unsure whether these enemies will end up betraying each other and tension as the heat between Decimus and Luciana skips over simmering and straight to boiling, there’s plenty for historical fiction and romance readers to enjoy.
I got to the final page and had to double check that there wasn’t any more, so I’m definitely keen to discover what the rest of the series has in store.
