A wonderfully old-fashioned whodunnit stuffed full however, (as you would expect) with quirks, peculiarities and eccentricity.  In a departure from the previous six Wild Card novels just two authors have written Dead Man’s Hand; George RR Martin and John J Miller. This allows a real insight into two of the more complex characters; astute private detective and ace Jay Ackroyd and the wonderfully enigmatic nat Daniel Brennan. Taking place in the same time period as Ace in the Hole, the majority of the focus for this remains in and around the gloriously freaky Jokertown, as Ackroyd and Brennan try to solve a murder from different angles. Slide a step to the side from the preceding books and enjoy this well crafted and stimulating read.

You will understand so much more of the Wild Card world if you start at the beginning of the series with ‘Wild Cards’. You do not have to be a science fiction and fantasy buff to enjoy these books. George RR Martin has proven his more mainstream appeal with the ‘Game of Thrones’ TV series adapted from his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. Recommended for anyone who appreciates the unusual and bizarre side of life.
