Sarah Broadhurst's view...

This is a fantastic book of our near future based on an alternative history where England was taken over by the Scion Government after the reign of Queen Victoria. Psychic power exists but is illegal and treasonous. That doesn’t stop the criminal underworld from profiting from it. There seems enough there to make an extremely satisfying novel, but no, Shannon has woven a world where scion with all its complexities is only a front and the real story concerns ethereal beings and a threat to all humankind. Fast, slick, disturbing, engaging, a really special book and I hope very much the start of a brilliant series. I am getting a little fed up with the plucky-girl-brings-down- dystopian-government plots that seem so popular these days, but this is really different, a world I can believe in and want to go back to. It has an extremely good thriller style and a marvellous first person to drag us into the story. Highly recommended.

If you like Samantha Shannon you might also like to read books by Ben Aaronovitch, Daniel H. Wilson and Charlie Fletcher.
