This gorgeously intense and fully fledged dystopian fantasy series continues in fine style with The Song Rising. Paige has risen through the ranks as she tries to combat the hell that precious few know about or even believe is forming, will the rest of the clairvoyants back or denounce her? I’m in awe at how incredibly rounded and complete this world is. The intricate layers not only ripple inwards to allow intimate access, they also begin to advance further afield, widening our viewpoint. Paige really is a role model for our times, willing to step forward for what she believes in, and although set in a reimagined England, comparisons can easily be made to the world around us. Told in the first person, I could feel Paige, rely on her, admire her, particularly when things went awry. I really didn’t want this third instalment to end, and I wait with baited breath for the next in the epic 'The Bone Season' series. The Song Rising was everything I have come to expect from Samantha Shannon, richly imagined, thrillingly exciting, and a humdinger of a read - highly recommended. ~ Liz Robinson
This is a fantastic book of our near future based on an alternative history where England was taken over by the Scion Government after the reign of Queen Victoria. Psychic power exists but is illegal and treasonous. That doesn’t stop the criminal underworld from profiting from it. There seems enough there to make an extremely satisfying novel, but no, Shannon has woven a world where scion with all its complexities is only a front and the real story concerns ethereal beings and a threat to all humankind. Fast, slick, disturbing, engaging, a really special book and I hope very much the start of a brilliant series. I am getting a little fed up with the plucky-girl-brings-down- dystopian-government plots that seem so popular these days, but this is really different, a world I can believe in and want to go back to. It has an extremely good thriller style and a marvellous first person to drag us into the story. Highly recommended. ~ Sarah Broadhurst Wow, just wow! This is the first in a seven book dystopian fantasy series, and what an absorbing cracker of a read it is. If you haven’t yet stepped foot inside the fantasy genre, please don’t turn away, as this touches reality, breathes a possible future, and is just so, so readable. Set in 2056 London, in a reimagined world where the Scion government has been in power since 1929, clairvoyance is a criminal offence and has been forced underground, into crime, in order to survive. Paige is a dreamwalker, she works for the underworld though her father is part of the Scion regime, suddenly arrested, she finds herself in a prison camp in Oxford, and everything she thought she knew, falls to pieces before her eyes. The orders of clairvoyance are beautifully explained in such a way, that I immediately felt at home and sank straight into the story. Samantha Shannon has created a fascinating, different, stand-out story, this is a new edition and also includes a prequel novella about Paige and her first foray into the clairvoyance underworld. An action packed humdinger of a story, I lived it, I loved it… The Bone Season is a truly fabulous start to what promises to be an epic series. ~ Liz Robinson
As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city's gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take centre stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner. Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided. Will Paige know who to trust? The hunt for the dreamwalker is on.
The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people's minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing. It is raining the day her life changes for ever. Attacked, drugged and kidnapped, Paige is transported to Oxford - a city kept secret for two hundred years, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. Paige is assigned to Warden, a Rephaite with mysterious motives. He is her master. Her trainer. Her natural enemy. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die.
The stunning sequel to the amazing The Bone Season which I really recommend reading first. It starts exactly where the last book finished with the clairvoyant attempting to return to London from the penal colony of Steol I. So now a life of hiding, running, intrigue and power mongering awaits our brave narrator Paige as it seems the whole of London is after her. This is dystopian fiction with a real difference, an extremely rich world with real depth. Paige wants to overthrow the tyrannical rulers, of course, but that will be so much harder here than it often is for plucky heroines in this genre. There are so many layers to scion society, attacking the government won’t be enough. She needs to start a rebellion and probably a war. Complex, vivid and compelling, it really is the best of its kind and more so. ~ Sarah Broadhurst A must-read for me, beautifully fast-paced, and adventurous, The Mime Order is the second novel in the superb The Bone Season dystopian fantasy series, and continues immediately after the first finishes. Paige and the rest of the survivors find themselves heading back towards London, can Paige create order from the chaos? You really can’t just drop into the middle of this series, start at the beginning and experience the joy of discovery. As relationships develop we begin to see deeper into hearts, understand what makes people tick, what has made them who they are. Samantha Shannon has the most incredible imagination, this world is impressive, so fully realised and vividly clear. I felt as though I was side by side with Paige as danger threatens the very heart of everything she holds dear (in fact, to be honest, I wanted to be Paige!). Weaving, diving, and absolutely thrilling, The Mime Order continues a very special series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. ~ Liz Robinson

Be aware, my good Reader, that this Pamphlet, no matter how controversial its content, must never fall into enemy Hands. The most important piece of clairvoyant literature written in the twenty-first century, On the Merits of Unnaturalness is a pamphlet first published anonymously in 2031 by Jaxon Hall, the voyant who would later become the mime-lord known as the White Binder. Hall was the first to index both known and supposed forms of Unnaturalness, resulting in the classification of the Seven Orders. This controversial piece of literature spread across the voyant underworld like a plague, revolutionising the syndicate but also creating discord in the form of brutal gang wars between the newly divided categories, the scars of which can still be seen today.Revelatory and subversive, On the Merits of Unnaturalness is a must-read for any reader with a desire to further immerse themselves in the incredible world of Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season.
