Jerome K Jerome: A BBC Radio Collection: Three Men in a Boat & more
"BBC adaptations of the 19th-century humourist’s best-loved tales, plus Judith French’s sly comedy based on Jerome’s experiences as a would-be actor Jerome K Jerome is best known for his comedy classic Three Men in a Boat and its sequel Three Men on the Bummel. Both hilarious tales are included here, alongside two spooky short stories, extracts from Jerome’s humorous essays and theatrical memoir, and a comic drama about his acting career. Three Men in a Boat – This 1962 musical adaptation of Jerome’s comic masterpiece about three friends who journey down the River Thames stars Leslie Phillips as George, Kenneth Horne as Harris and Hubert Gregg as ‘J’. Three Men on the Bummel – After their adventures afloat, the intrepid trio take to two wheels, deciding to embark on a cycling tour of Germany. Adapted and performed by Jeremy Nicholas. The Dancing Partner – When a group of young women bemoan a lack of dance partners, toymaker Papa Geibel gets creative… James Hayter, Rolf Lefebvre and Sheila Grant star in this dramatisation of Jerome’s spine-chilling story. . After Supper Ghost Stories – Christmas Eve 1891, and in Laburnum Grove, Tooting, Uncle John’s whisky-punch and Aunt Maria’s lobsters aren’t the only frights on the menu. Starring Dinsdale Lansden, Geoffrey Matthews and Linda Polan. Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow – In these five sparkling essays, read by Hugh Laurie and abridged by Neville Teller, our hapless narrator offers us his entertaining observations on the topics of being idle, cats and dogs, love and romance, eating and drinking, and babies. On Stage – Adapted and read by Stephen Surrey, these witty, whimsical extracts find the author looking back on his time treading the boards, recalling his performances and his fellow thespians. One Man on a Stage – Judith French’s scintillating play imagines Jerome’s life as a jobbing actor, working alongside the enthusiastic no-hopers of the provincial Victorian stage. Starring Joseph Millson. First published 1885 (On the Stage – and Off), 1886 (Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow), 1889 (Three Men in a Boat), 1891 (‘After Supper Ghost Stories’), 1893 (‘The Dancing Partner’), 1900 (Three Men on the Bummel), (One Man on a Stage) text copyright © Judith French 2007 Cast and credits Written by Jerome K Jerome Three Men in a Boat Three Men on the Bummel The Dancing Partner After Supper Ghost Stories Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow On Stage One Man on a Stage © 2025 BBC Studios Distribution Ltd. "Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859-1927) was an English writer and humorist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat. Other works include the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow; Three Men on the Bummel, a sequel to Three Men in a Boat, and several other novels. Owing to bad investments in the local mining industry, Jerome’s family fell into poverty and debt collectors visited often, an experience Jerome described vividly in his autobiography My Life and Times (1926).The young Jerome wished to go into politics or be a man of letters, but the death of his father when the younger Jerome was age 13 and of his mother when he was age 15 forced him to quit his studies and find work to support himself. He was employed at the London and Northwestern Railway, initially collecting coal that fell along the railway, and remained there for four years. Narrator Edward E. French is “Best Makeup” Oscar nominated for his extraordinary Makeup Effects in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He has won the “Best Makeup” Emmy Award for work in the Westworld reboot and the TV series House. He has also won the Hollywood Makeup Guild Award for work on Mad TV. Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)
"Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers – the jokes have been praised as fresh and witty. The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator Jerome K. Jerome) and two real-life friends, George Wingrave (who would become a senior manager at Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of a London printing business, called Harris in the book), with whom Jerome often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, 'as Jerome admits, developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog'. The trip is a typical boating holiday of the time in a Thames camping skiff. This was just after commercial boat traffic on the Upper Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.[citation needed]. Following the overwhelming success of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome later published a sequel, about a cycling tour in Germany, titled Three Men on the Bummel (also known as Three Men on Wheels, 1900). Famous works of the author Jerome K. Jerome: Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, Three Men in a Boat, Diary of a Pilgrimage, Three Men on the Bummel, Paul Kelver, All Roads Lead to Calvary."

The Victorian Ghost Story - The Men
"Almost always when we think of Ghost Stories, we first think of those written by the Victorians. When you consider the depth of literary talent available over the extraordinary length of Queen Victoria's reign, allied to the fascination with their all things spiritual on 'the other side', then perhaps it's simply right place, right time. Whatever the reasons given or proffered the reality and known facts are that if you want a really good ghost story to bring that edge of chill, that foreboding of dread, that feeling that in an empty house we are not quite alone and that sometimes the sharp, sheer shock of what just happened is upon us then look no further than 'The Victorian Ghost Story' for your reading and listening pleasure. 01 - The Victorian Ghost Story - The Men - An Introduction 02 - The Miniature by J Y Ackerman 03 - An Account of Some Strange Disturbances in Aungier Street by Sheridan Le Fanu 04 - The Haunted and the Haunters; or, The House and the Brain - Part 1 by Edward Bulwer Lytton 05 - The Haunted and the Haunters; or, The House and the Brain - Part 2 by Edward Bulwer Lytton 06 - The Signalman by Charles Dickens 07 - The Botathen Ghost from Footprints of Former Men in Far Cornwall by the Reverend R S Hawker 08 - The Romance of Certain Old Clothes by Henry James 09 - The Shadow of a Shade by Tom Hood 10 - No Living Voice by Thomas Street Millington 11 - The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stevenson 12 - At the End of the Passage by Rudyard Kipling 13 - The Man of Science by Jerome K Jerome 14 - Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book by M R James 15 - Jerry Bundler by W W Jacobs 16 - The Tomb of Sarah by F G Loring 17 - The Case of Vincent Pyrwhit by Barry Pain"
