This fast-paced crime thriller would be perfect for those who love exploring the world of police procedurals yet are looking for something that stands out from the crowd. Author Charlie Gallagher, as a former police officer, takes you into the secretive high-pressured world of the source handler. This is the second in the Abigail Morton Thriller series, it was my first outing, and while it read really well as a standalone, I’d also love to take a step back and read the first in the series.
The first three chapters hit with huge impact, I was vividly aware of what was happening but didn’t yet understand the why. Then suddenly at chapter four it turns back to four months previously and awareness of this particular story begins. While source handler Abigail is most definitely the leading character, almost equal footing is given to one of her sources, Betsy, mother to Alex and Josh who lead an organised crime group.
Abigail and Betsy make a fascinating pair, as dark humour, empathy, and determination follows and surrounds them. The perspective from both sides allows a feeling of authenticity which is no doubt helped by the author’s 13-year police career. He writes in short sharp chapters, throwing in an occasional reveal to another character and strand to the story that remains at a distance.
The setting in both Kent and London really grounds this tale and I particularly enjoyed the scenes when the full source unit came together. The ending when it arrived rushed in, and some aspects were not fully explained. Personally, I enjoy this when handled well by the author as it feels realistic and keeps you pondering the story long after it finishes.
Fast-moving and with a dual aspect of handler and source being explored, His Own Brother would suit those looking for something just that little bit different from their usual crime thriller reads.
