The unnamed 107 year old has lived a full life, loved and lost and is reflecting on death and life. This philosophical musing is thought provoking to the reader as it confronts life’s meaning, religion and moments of rights and wrongs experienced throughout a life. The narrator is bed-bound but his mental monologue is strong, and makes Final Notes a very character focused book.
I think that the delicate subjects within the novel are handled with care, the narrator’s accepting curiosity about death making this a gentle and peaceful read.
I found the epilogue to the story to be an interesting addition that further developed the story from the author’s bedside. The events had an impact on some of the topics that have already been reflected on - storing a digital version of yourself for the future and the ability to research family heritage, which again emphasised the key themes of reflecting on our purpose and legacy. The final line made me laugh, I hope that this was the intention, it was like the final piece remaining before total renewal.
