An Amsterdam-set thriller by a Dutch author hitherto unknown in the UK, this has pace and intrigue to spare. Michael Bellicher, a business consultant accidentally stumbles across matters mysterious and finds himself under the scrutiny of the sinister Mr Miller and the unsettling tech organisation he fronts, a stranger who knows things about him he just hould not. The disturbing cloud of technology gone rampant through the seditious power of the Internet taking on a disturbing aura of menace is a familiar trope but the novel's rhythm and sheer readibility, which landed it on the bestseller list back home, conquers all in its rapid wake. An old-fashioned thriller as we once used to like them, albeit with a modern theme. ~ Maxim Jakubowski
