An engaging tale of coincidences, connections and communication with the future David Caffrey is a gifted autistic programmer, concerned about being able to continue to work from home and evading his mother’s attempts to get him to meet more people. When he starts to hear strange, garbled voices he thinks he fears he’s developing schizophrenia until a hypnosis session puts him in contact with Amanda. Claiming to be his great-granddaughter from the future where AI superpowers are at war and trying to manipulate the past in their favour. This sets in motion events that transform David’s life, bringing him together with a family as they try to save the future, developing realmshifting abilities enhanced by his neurodiversity. I really enjoyed the concept of this story, it weaves together so many distinct elements in a way that feels authentic and believable. David’s character is likeable and engaging, I warmed to him quickly and hoped that he also found the connections he wanted from early on in the book. The balance of the Sci-fi, futuristic elements with the Yogi and mystical teachings was well done and felt authentic to the storyline. It’s also always welcome to celebrate diversity in characters and to see David’s perspectives and behaviours, shaped by his neurodiversity being the key to save the future, was an added bonus. I loved the side characters, Sabrina, Jamie, Rishi and Priya too, their close bonds were endearing and I was rooting for them to succeed. The Accidental Realmshifter follows David Caffery, a gifted autistic programmer whose ordered life is disrupted when he hears mysterious voices. Initially fearing schizophrenia, David eventually discovers the voice belongs to his great-granddaughter from 2102, warning of warring AI superpowers manipulating the past. Knowing that eventually they will be discovered, David must rapidly develop his latent "realmshifting" abilities—the power to access hidden dimensions—enhanced by his autistic neurology.
