Beyond Oblivion

Beyond Oblivion

Author: Trevor P. Kwain Format: Paperback Release Date: 29/01/2021

‘Beyond Oblivion’ is a collection of science fiction short stories. Each story looks at an aspect of life that we may recognise, with a futuristic twist.  In ‘The Mortgage’ I liked that nostalgia and romanticisation of the past doesn’t change even in the author’s futuristic world, It made me smile although I did quite see the twists of this story coming. The emotions of ‘The Year of the Pig’ resonate strongly with me considering our pandemic present. The themes of vaccinations and the health risks connected with low immunity and immune systems, although given an environmental and sci-fi twist, appeared pertinent. There’s also the subtle inclusion of social media posts replacing “real” news. Each of the seven stories vary in length and there’s plenty of elements from our present-day world critiqued within each I found ‘Beyond Oblivion’ an interesting collection and I can see how it could pave the way for different discussions about how we live now. As I read I was eager to see what happened within each mini-universe while also wanting to know which part of our world would be the focus next.

The Wynnman and the Crimson Paths

The Wynnman and the Crimson Paths

Author: Trevor P. Kwain Format: Paperback Release Date: 12/07/2020

'The Wynnman and the Crimsons Paths' is Trevor P. Kwain's second adventure set in a Wimbledon that exists only in his imagination. As in his first book, 'The Wynnman and the Black Azalea', the newly arrived Italian baker, Enrico LoTrova, plays amateur sleuth, aided by his friends and neighbours, exposing the shortcomings of the local police and solving clues in the most audacious way. This is an exciting and fast-paced read, Bond-like in it's conception, with characters who are either completely good or bad. The villains are truly evil or mad but at the end of the story we are left wondering whether the good guys are really all they seem to be. There are murders, robberies, explosions, secret tunnels and strange experiments that rock the neighbourhood...never a dull moment! The sentence construction and language used are sometimes distracting but the pure fantasy of the story is compelling and beguiling. As the author writes about a book found during the course of the narrative, there is a 'thin veil..between reality and fantasy'. As at the end of the first book, the arch villain escapes undetected, so we look forward to the third episode of 'The Wynnman' to bring us his further nefarious deeds and hopefully discover what he's really up to and, I'm sure, eventually be brought to justice.  Drena Irish, A LoveReading Ambassador

The Wynnman and The Black Azalea

Author: Trevor P. Kwain Format: Paperback Release Date: 01/06/2020

Just finished reading the above novel. I really enjoyed this novel as an easy read and something a little different. The search for the black azalea captured the imagination as to whether it was actually a flower or something else. The interaction between the characters was good, and there were twists and turns along the way which kept me reading. Enrico the baker, seemed to be blamed for most things along the way so it was good when he was let off the hook at the end! The descriptions of the surroundings were good without becoming too long or boring, while the characters seemed to become real, the bumbling policemen, the villain and so on. All in all I enjoyed reading this offering by Trevor P Kwain and would read more of his novels in the future.
