Suffused in Welsh history, and the magical undulations of the Welsh language and landscapes (its fictional setting was inspired by Ynys Enlli/Bardsey Island), Alison Layland’s After the Clearances is a sublimely powerful work of speculative climate fiction.

Set in 2056, the story is centred on the remote Welsh-island community of The Seeders, which was founded several years earlier as a result of the government’s Clearances policy. Though “implemented in the rural areas of Britain”, this resettlement scheme was “concentrated on Cymru in the aftermath of the war of independence”. As a result, the community’s Ynys Hudol home is “a refuge. It is also a place of learning and development. Once the latter has truly eclipsed the former, then we will be ready. Seeds can lie dormant for years, even decades, waiting to spring to life when conditions are right”.

Into this set-up, we meet 13-year-old Glesin, the first child to be born on the island, who has an inkling her family are harbouring significant secrets when a mainlander arrives.

Laying bare a tangle of unexpected connections and bonds between islanders and mainlanders as it shares a fresh vision of what the impact of climate change might be, After the Clearances is a bold and soulful story of resilience, revenge and rising from ruins. In the words of Welsh singer and politician Dafydd Iwan, whom the author quotes in the book’s front matter, “We’re still here/Despite everyone and everything”.
