Jane Lovering on what inspired her to write Star Struck...
'The inspiration for Starstruck came (whisper this..) from my obsession with the sci fi show, Babylon 5, where I had the most massive crush on ranger Marcus Cole. Did I say crush? I mean, a true, deep and abiding love, of course, ‘crush’ is far too shallow a word for the emotions that I felt every week at 9.30. Babylon 5 is long gone, but I often wondered, if I’d been offered the chance to go and meet Jason Carter who played Marcus, would I have gone? If I had, what would I have said to him? Would I even have dared to ask for an autograph, or would I have been so crippled with hero-worship that I could only mutter at the carpet and blush a particularly unflattering shade of fuschia?
And so, when I came to write Starstruck, I saw the perfect opportunity to explore the ‘what if’ of meeting a long-time crush...I mean, deep and abiding love. What if he appeared to return that love? What then? And what if my heroine had a reason for feeling unlovable and uncertain? So I gave her reasons for wanting to go to Nevada to meet her hero beyond simply wanting to get a signed photo – she wants to begin to turn her life around. And, in trying to build herself a new life and new memories, she gets drawn in to a power struggle between two men, one she’s been watching on screen and desiring for the last eighteen months, and one who’s just walked into her life.
How would I have behaved if Jason Carter had done more than smile at me if I’d ever asked for his autograph? I’ll never know (unless you’re reading this, Jason, in which case, come and get me!) but I can explore the complicated emotions behind getting what you think you want in the storyline of Starstruck.'
