"History long buried and secrets are fighting to come to life in this twisting medical thriller. "
At the start of Male, Unknown an unnamed patient is admitted to the ICU with a stark, mysterious message for young doctor Edie carved into his body. Edie is repressing memories from her childhood, and as a condition of her employment and further training is undergoing therapy for this dissociation. This medical thriller lures you in to see if this patient is connected to Edie's childhood, and what the fallout will be when the past drags the answers to these questions into the light.
There were times I felt like I understood where the story was going only for a twist to send me reeling. Leaving me once more like I was hearing the middle of a conversation I’m not a part of, the truth and key to everything held just beyond reach. In this twisting psychological thriller, our character’s history molds their actions, the need for power permeates every word, the search for truth extends until the final words. Edie’s lost memories call into question her reliability as a narrator, Harry’s perspectives supporting her story as he supports his fiancee. Starting off at a meandering pace, the tension and momentum builds in the background up until the final gripping chapters. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, the final moments allow for the dawning of realisation that Male, Unknown is a very clever, suspenseful read.
