Full of energy and gumption, this is a thoroughly entertaining and inspiring historical crime novel. Aspiring journalist Non supports a young woman who wants to clear her name after being wrongly imprisoned by the Vice Chancellor’s Court, and fellow Basil, is asked to investigate after students are found bound and gagged outside their colleges.
The Oxford of 1883 as described in the novel, is the University, their courts try the townspeople, and their rules affect everyone. This is the third in the Oxford Mysteries series, yet my first foray into the world of Non and Basil. I felt very happy and comfortable joining at this point, and would definitely like to catch up with the first two novels.
The sense of place is fabulous, I found myself traversing the streets alongside the characters. The two main leads work together beautifully, both in terms of their involvement in the plot, and as an amateur detective team. I also loved the inclusion of the real life Felicia Skene in this novel, as author Alis Hawkins says in her notes, she has tried to do her bit to spread the fame of this remarkable woman.
I also wholly admire the author for not wanting to misrepresent other real people (from the University) and creating entirely fictional characters where necessary. The writing is fresh and spirited and the plot devilishly twisty, yet there is empathy and compassion towards the injustices that are found.
Spirited and on occasion justifiably feisty, The Hunter’s Club revels in its ability to champion just causes while delivering an entertaining read.
