"Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has to contend with two killers—one human, one ursine—and find them both before more people die in this gripping thriller."
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett needs to contend with two killers—one human, one ursine, and find them both before more people die in Three-Inch Teeth by C.J. Box.
It’s October and the start of elk hunting season in the Bighorn Mountains. Joe’s old nemesis Dallas Cates has been released from prison and is out for revenge. Cates, a former world rodeo champion, has tattooed names on his hand as a grim revenge checklist. Included on the list is Pickett, but also his long-time associate Nate Romanowski and his wife, as well as a judge, a prosecutor, a sheriff and a prison guard. Cates assembles a rag-tag group to help extract his revenge, using the bear attacks as cover.
Threats from wildlife are nothing new in Twelve Sleep County, where Joe patrols, and residents routinely carry guns, bear spray and other weapons. But the recent bear attacks leave many locals spooked, given their violence, frequency and distance between attacks. No one can understand or explain them.
This is Box’s 24th novel featuring Pickett, and has all the hallmarks of other novels in the series. Abundant wildlife, soaring mountain ranges and rugged landscapes all feature, reflecting Box’s rich local knowledge. The tale is told in alternating viewpoints between Pickett and Cates, which dials up the intensity of the cat and mouse game between the two men.
The action doesn’t let up until the final pages, marking yet another successful page-turning thriller featuring the indomitable game warden from Wyoming.

The thrilling new novel in the New York Times bestselling Joe Pickett series by award-winning author C.J. Box. Wyoming game warden Joe faces two different kinds of rampaging killers – one animal, one human – in this riveting adventure.
A rogue grizzly bear has gone on a rampage, killing, among others, the prospective fiancé of Joe Pickett's daughter.
At the same time, Dallas Cates, who Joe helped lock up, is released from prison with a list of six names tattooed on his skin. He wants revenge on the people who sent him away: the people he blames for the deaths of his entire family and the loss of his reputation and property.
Targeted are his lawyer, a judge, the county prosecutor, a prison guard, Joe's associate Nate Romanowski – and Joe Pickett himself.
Using the grizzly attacks as cover, Cates devises a method of violence identical to the bear killings and sets out to methodically check off his list. Can Joe stop him before he himself becomes the next target on the killer's list?
