"I found ‘Another Day in Paradise’ to be an entertaining and easy to read recollection of what it’s like to really move to your favourite holiday destination as well as being an inspiring nudge to take the plunge on whatever dream or ambition you may have."
I’m sure many of us go on holiday and picture what it would be like to move there full time. This is the tale of a British couple who moved to a small village of the Algarve, Portugal for a quieter and more serene way of life. Karen and Nick Telling visited Carvoeiro for 15 years on holiday before deciding to take the plunge and move there permanently in 2003. With a kind community, new jobs, navigating rental properties, an ever expanding collection of adopted animals and life changing surgery to treat the complications of a long-term spinal condition, this book goes through the ups and downs of life as well as those of moving to a foreign country. The author takes us through the move in a casual and eminently readable tone. The obstacles with their rental properties, the culture clash of working and living in Portugal are dealt with in an optimistic but matter-of-fact way. There’s also plenty of funny anecdotes with friends and family along the way. I would have liked to know more about whether the planned renovation of the home they eventually bought took place, and perhaps some more detail about life after Karen’s surgery. As it is, I found ‘Another Day in Paradise’ to be an entertaining and easy to read recollection of what it’s like to really move to your favourite holiday destination as well as being an inspiring nudge to take the plunge on whatever dream or ambition you may have.

A warm-hearted, autobiographical story told by an author who really knows her subject, the location and the lifestyle in a small village in the Algarve, as seen through the eyes of a British couple, who made the move seeking a quieter, more serene way of life. What lurks in the shadows of paradise, however, is a life-changing illness she has struggled with in the past and now comes to the fore. They have made Portugal their home. Will they be able to navigate the health system and succeed in getting her the urgent operation needed, to prevent her from spending the rest of her life in a wheelchair? This adds tension to an otherwise gentle, amusing, highly descriptive story, filled with wonderful observations, funny clashes of culture and an entertaining learning curve for all concerned. The dialogue is so authentic, you can hear their voices. The characters appear real and 3-dimensional and the supporting cast of cats and dogs at times threaten to steal the show. This is a fulfilling and satisfying read, uplifting, positive and makes you long for a sequel.
