Like his famous Lewis Trilogy, this stand-alone mystery has a dual-time frame and a small island setting. This time it is a remote Canadian island. One of the investigating team has Scottish ancestry and when he meets the suspect, the wife of the murdered man, he has an odd feeling of recognition. She awakens childhood memories and through these we get a large slice of Scottish history and the horrors of the Highland clearances. These two strands come together in a most satisfying ending. Highly recommended.

When Detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at Montreal's St. Hubert airfield, he does so without looking back.
For Sime, the 850-mile journey ahead represents an opportunity to escape the bitter blend of loneliness and regret that has come to characterise his life in the city.
