"The third in the Blackwood & Virtue series has the crew of the Daring on the trail of a bold and conniving pirate to track down an item of value for His Imperial Majesty."
Light in the Abyss sees Commander Lord Liam Blackwood and Petty Officer Amelia Virtue chasing down an expensive relic of one of the noble houses, a golden suncatcher. Facing a wiley adversary in the Theropod thief, Shrodar and his crew, all those on HMSS Daring must overcome new challenges for their mission to be successful. Meanwhile strain appears in Liam and Amelia’s personal relationship, as they try to juggle their responsibilities on board with their personal relationship.
The strain shown in the everyday realities of Liam and Amelia’s personal relationship given their rank on the Daring was the first hint to me that this book was a sequel. It felt like the couple began their relationship in an earlier story, so if readers wanted to follow that aspect of the plotline from the beginning, then it would be better to start with the two previous books: Winds Marque and Dark Star Rising. Everything about the storyline flowed well, and those without prior knowledge can easily sink into the maritime military science fiction. Perhaps a greater understanding of the world at large is also provided in the earlier books, but I found the information we were provided in this book plenty to be immersed in the story.
I loved how the traditional naval roles have been adapted for the spaceships in this science fiction world, combining the familiar and the alien seamlessly. If you like anything sci-fi or rum-soaked and pirate-y, then climb on board, this entertaining, action-packed voyage across space is for you.
